Last week I traveled to stand next to one of my best friends as she embarked on her next stage of life – Marriage! I first met the bride the summer before our Senior year of High School at a program for “gifted” students called Governor’s Scholars. As fate would have it we would also end up living on the same floor in the dorms during our Freshman Year of College. As a matter of fact 3 of the “BGs” (black girls) from Governor’s Scholars ended up living on our floor (me, Evon – the bride, and TeTe) and a 4th (Shaye) ended up attending University of Louisville also and we remain great friends to this day.
So I was excited to get to travel and hang out with my college girlfriends as we celebrated Evon’s big day. Not everyone was able to make it but most of our “Diva Squad” (when we were going to parties)/”Rough Sophistication” teammates (when we were playing flag football) made it. We laughed, cried, ate, drank, danced, and reminisced on the good ol’ days – being a grown up is tough. While in Atlanta, I also made time to hang out with my first and closest friend from my professional days – Seleta. It’s always good catching up with her and her daughter Ms. Keri!
While initially I felt rushed getting to Atlanta and traveling right before a large vacation (I leave for Australia in a little over a week), I’m so glad I took the time to relax and have a little fun. The weekend was a reminder that I need to make time for those that I care about, because I really did come back to KY feeling refreshed (even if only temporary).
Anyhoo – remember Friendship is Good for the Soul!
